10 Tips I Learned at Makeup School

Tip No. 5: Powder can never look like real skin

Our skin isn’t naturally matte, so unless you want to look like a mannequin, you should never start with powder. Instead, use liquid foundation to add a dewy base first, says Stewart. Look for a water-based or gel foundation for the most natural match (try Make Up For Ever HD Foundation, $40).

“When applying your foundation, think of your face as an inverted triangle,” says Prior. Your forehead is the base, and your chin is the point. You should only apply foundation along the lines of the triangle. Use a damp sponge to blend it into your skin with downward strokes. Facial fuzz tends to lie vertically on the skin, so you’ll get fewer streaks if you go with the direction of the hair, says Stewart. Then set your face with just a bit of powder to get rid of any shine.
