Before You Tattoo: Must-Know Tips

getting a tattoo process

Step 7: Prepare for the day of

Once you’ve set your appointment date, it’s time to prepare for the day of. Here’s a checklist of things Oafenhammer and Saigh say to remember before you go:

• Eat something. Getting a tattoo on an empty stomach can lead to fainting. And take a few snacks with you, in case you start to get light-headed during the process.

• Don’t take any painkillers or drink any alcohol. I know, it’s tempting, but both thin your blood, which isn’t good when you’re getting a tattoo. And most places refuse to tattoo if you’ve been drinking.

• Take cash. Most shops will take credit cards, but it’s best to have cash with you just in case (and you’ll need it if you plan on tipping).

• Wear appropriate clothing. The area needs to be easily accessed, so if you’re getting a shoulder tattoo, make sure you wear a tank top. Likewise, if you’re getting one on your leg, wear shorts.

• Bring distractions. If you’re sitting for a long session, an iPod, magazines, or a laptop can be extremely helpful — as long as they don’t hinder the tattoo artist in any way. And you can bring a friend for moral support, but don’t bring a ton of people with you (they’ll just get in the way).
