When it comes to shoes, both Easley and Courreges agree that footwear can get tricky. The main reason? People’s feet have changed so much over the last couple of decades. “If you go to a vintage store looking for shoes, you’ll probably see a small range, from size 4 1/2 to size 6,” says Courreges. And not only were women’s feet smaller, but they were also more narrow.

Even if you can find a pair, there are a number of things you’ll need to check before you buy, like soles, stitching, outer and upper fabric, suppleness (if leather), and any fading. By the time you cover that entire list, you could probably order a great reproduction that mimics the vintage style you’re looking for. Courreges recommends Remix Vintage Shoes.
